From 28 – 30 May 2014, the Environmental Learning Research Centre at Rhodes University hosted a successful Training of Trainers workshop. The training session included a range of partners, including teacher educators from UKZN, UNISA, UCT, Stellenbosch, University of Zululand, University of Fort Hare, University on Limpopo, Walter Sisulu University and Rhodes Universities; NGOs (Delta, WESSA); parastatals (SANBI); we also had partners from RandWater and Natures Valley Trust; Department of Environmental Affairs, and Department of Basic Education subject advisors.
The partners worked together to design a range of training approaches for teacher education courses supporting environmental learning across different school phases, and within multiple partner contexts. The partners also divided into provincial teams to plan accredited training for teachers and subject advisors. The teams designed training frameworks to train teachers and subject advisors on the following Fundisa teacher education materials:
- Healthy Living, Foundation phase – Life Skills
- Life and Living, Intermediate Phase – Natural Sciences & Technology
- Indigenous Knowledge and Technology, Intermediate phase – Natural Sciences and Technology
- Water, Intermediate phase – Social Sciences
- Water, Senior phase – Social Sciences
- Climate Change, Senior phase – Natural Sciences
- Climate Change, FET phase, Geography
- Water, FET phase – Geography
- Marine Biodiversity, FET phase – Life Sciences
- Biodiversity, FET phase – Life Sciences
