Utilizing the Value Creation Framework to evaluate the impact of the Fundisa for Change’s green economy and entrepreneurship course on the subject knowledge, pedagogy, and assessment practice of Economic and Management Sciences and Business Studies teachers in South Africa.
The report builds on the findings of the formative report, which covered the period between 27 March and 8 May 2021. The formative report identified various aspects of the course that needed to be adjusted to improve the experiences of the course participants and the chances of the course attaining its objectives. Besides leading to critical improvements and better experiences for the participants and facilitators, the report informed the methodological choices of the summative evaluation, which resulted in the present report. The summative evaluation was conducted through semi-structured interviews with seventeen purposively sampled participants representing all the involved parties. Observations and assignment outcomes were used as support data. The evaluation process was anchored on the ideas of the Value Creation Framework, a process-based evaluation that tracks cycles of value creation in a social learning space. The main aspects of the enquiry related to the course’s objectives, asking if there were improvements in the participants’ knowledge of the subject, teaching approaches, and assessment practice. For funders, facilitators, coordinators, and course leaders, the evaluation sought to understand the enabling factors that helped them develop and administer the course and the strategic value they gained from their involvement. In discussing the findings, the report shares the recommendations provided by interviewees on how to scale up the course. It should be emphasised that while this report is for the present funding cycle, the evaluation of the course and its outcomes have not ended. Evaluation of this course is an ongoing process, and more insights will continue to emerge as participants and facilitators (reflective practitioners) reflect on their experiences and put what they learned into practice. The insights from this report can also be transposed into other projects under the broader Fundisa for Change programme and programmes supported by the involved stakeholders.
